Google is a web search engine owned by Google Inc. It is the most-used search engine on the World Wide Web, handling more than three billion searches each day. As of February 2016 it has 64.0% of the market share, making it the most used search engine in the US.

Competitors of Google include Baidu and Soso.com in China; Naver.com and Daum in South Korea; Yandex Search in Russia; Seznam.cz in the Czech Republic; Yahoo! Search in Japan, Taiwan, and the United States, as well as Bing and DuckDuckGo.

History

Google began in 1996 as a research project by Ph.D. students Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University. The search engine was originally hosted at google.stanford.edu until September 15, 1997 when google.com was registered. Page and Brin incorporated their company, Google, on September 4, 1998.

Fun facts

  • For approximately 40 minutes on January 31, 2009, all search results were mistakenly classified as malware and could therefore unable to be clicked. This was caused by human error.
  • Google acquired its name from a misspelling of the word "googol", which is one followed by one hundred zeros.
  • Google Search was originally going to be called "BackRub".
